Supporting TECHO - Emergency in Haiti

Dear readers,

this blog post regarding my support for TECHO is urgent, and I encourage you to read through and support in any way you can.

On 14 August 2021, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti, approximately 150 kilometres west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The earthquake has devastated multiple communities, leaving hundreds of thousands of people in dire need of food, water, basic sanitation and shelter. At least 2.207 people were confirmed killed as of 22 August, and above 12.000 injured. The suffering left in the wake of the earthquake was compounded by the heavy rains from Tropical Depression Grace, which triggered flooding and mudslides in some localities.

Damage to the region's already fragile infrastructure is making it difficult to access the affected areas, according to Unicef, around 1,2 million people were affected, the international agency AFP said that more than 60.000 homes were destroyed and another 76.000 suffered various damages. There are more than 60,000 families, with an estimate of 270.000 people without homes. And the risk of COVID-19 spread remains extremely high and is accompanied by vaccine hesitancy and very slow roll out, especially in rural parts of the country.

TECHO's response to the emergency

Following the emergency response protocol, TECHO has quickly organised different coordination tables together with the Haitian team. Their goal is to build 1.000 homes by the end of the year, anchored in the financing and partnerships that they achieve. On Monday 16 August, TECHO launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for the construction of houses. The campaign made in Funraise has versions in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese and is programmed to receive donations of different currencies.

The diffusion is being made from the digital channels of TECHO Haiti, Latam, the United States and Europe.

Please help me support TECHO's work through their campaign here.
